Wake Forest, NC
Wake Forest, North Carolina
If you hear the words “Wake Forest” and immediately think of the university, you aren't alone. The original location of Wake Forest University was, in fact, in Wake Forest, N.C before it moved to its current home of Winston Salem, N.C in 1956. Today, Wake Forest is a quaint and worthwhile town nestled north of Raleigh, and it is quickly growing in popularity as a place to live. In fact, in 2007, Wake Forest was listed by Forbes Magazine as the 20th fastest growing suburb in the United States – and the numbers continue to climb.

Wake Forest is included in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill metropolitan statistical area, which houses roughly two million residents. The town of Wake Forest got its start when Dr. Calvin Jones purchased several acres of land in Wake County, which became known as the Forest of Wake, in 1820. Like many small Southern towns growing near the cusp of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Wake Forest obtained much of its economic footing once a railroad was introduced – the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad.

Though Wake Forest University has relocated, the town offers an abundance of educational opportunities, including nine elementary schools, several private schools, a technical community college and a Baptist seminary. The DuBois Center, started by African-American rights activist W.E.B. DuBois, is on the national register of historic landmarks and now serves as a thriving community center. In addition, those interested in the early history of Wake Forest University and the town as a whole will enjoy a trip to the museum.

Media wise, Wake Forest hosts a number of intriguing newspapers and magazines, a few of which are independent. In 2014, 27587 MAGAZINE arrived within the community as a window into the culture of the town. The Wake Weekly, the independent community newspaper, has a thriving circulation as well.
