Designated as Main Street City in 1982, Statesville has been busy promoting economic growth while revitalizing the downtown retail district which has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town is home to five Districts on the National Register of Historic Places, four of which represent residential districts where historic homes date back to the mid-1800s. Although the downtown area is now a nucleus for excitement, it was not always such a cheery place. In 1855, many downtown buildings were destroyed by the first of several fires to strike the town. Existing buildings today were rebuilt starting in 1860 and date from that time to 1930. A downtown revitalization continues to take place in Statesville and includes more than 110 building renovations since those fires.
