When you see Main Street, you'll be reminded of ... Main Street in Mayberry. You might even expect to see Sheriff Taylor, Barney and little Opie. Of course, that was a long time ago but the town still retains its quaint Southern charm. And, in fact, Andy Griffith was born here so it is no wonder that there is such similarity between the two towns. If you're a fan of Mayberry, you'll be able to tour the familiar places from the series and even ride in the squad car.
"... you'll find an amazing amount of things to do. You can explore the city and visit many historic homes and buildings or head further into the mountains for hiking, canoeing, whitewater rafting or a leisurely drive along the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway."
If you can pull yourself away from the Mayberry memories, you'll find an amazing amount of things to do. You can explore the city and visit many historic homes and buildings or head further into the mountains for hiking, canoeing, whitewater rafting or a leisurely drive along the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway.
The arts are well represented with art galleries, music events and festivals and handmade pottery. And if you're a wine lover, you just may have hit the mother lode. Situated as it is in the Yadkin Valley wine region, Mount Airy offers many opportunities for wine tasting and tours at local vineyards.
An interesting local site is North Carolina Granite, which has the distinction of being the world's largest open-faced quarry. Visitors can view the quarry from an observation deck and astronauts can see it from space.
And if you need a new perspective on life, you'll find it just outside of town. Carolina Ziplines Canopy Tours will put you in a harness so you can soar over the tree line for a bird's eye view of the area.
Be forewarned. If you visit "the friendly city," you may want to stay forever in this lovely town.
